Prevent the Plug
Inappropriate items flushed down the toilet could create plumbing issues for your sewer system resulting in maintenance costs for your household and the communities system.
Only flush the 3Ps – pee, poo, paper (toilet Paper). Even products marketed as “flushable” can harm the sewer system.
Put these items in the garbage
- Feminine hygiene products
- Wipes marked flushable (baby, facial, hand)
- Cleaning rags
- Diapers
- Condoms
- Hair
- Cotton swabs/cotton balls/Q-tips
- Paper towels, facial tissue, disposal face masks
- Dental floss
Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG)
Pouring fats, oils and grease down a sink or a toilet can cause blockages in your home sewer system, resulting in sewer backups and costly repairs.
Why are fats, oils and grease a concern – when the warm fats, oils or grease are poured down the drain, it cools, hardens and sticks on the inside of the sewer pipe. This material will build up over time and cause a block in the pipe causing a sewage backup.
What can you do to prevent FOG from going into the sewer?
- Before washing pots, pans or dirty dishes, wait for the FOG to harden then wipe with paper towel and dispose in the garbage.
- If fats, oils and grease are in liquid form, let cool and then pour or scape the material into a container and dispose in garbage.
